Westmoreland

Westmoreland is a city in and the county seat of Pottawatomie County, Kansas. Being a comparatively new town Westmoreland is one of the smallest county seat towns in the eastern part of the state. Westmoreland was platted in 1871. It was named after Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Established in 1858 when a post office was instituted with John McKimens as postmaster. Mr. McKimens named the post office after Westmoreland, Pennsylvania, where he originated. Westmoreland Elementary School, part of the Rock Creek Schools district, serves grades kindergarten to K6 and had 156 students and 12 teachers in 2005.
